Psychiatry & Medication Management
Women’s Psychiatry & Medication Management
At Sunstone Psychiatry for Women, we view psychiatry as more than simply prescribing medication. It involves understanding the many factors that can influence mental health, including hormones, reproductive health, life experiences, medical history, and current symptoms.
When medication is appropriate, it becomes one part of a personalized treatment plan designed around your individual needs, concerns, and goals. Our role is to help you make informed decisions about your care and determine what treatment approach feels right for you.
What Women’s Psychiatry Means at Sunstone
When Psychiatry and Medication Management Can Help
Therapy can be incredibly helpful for many people, but there are times when additional psychiatric care may be needed. Medication management is not about replacing therapy. It’s about addressing symptoms that may be rooted in biological, hormonal, or neurological contributors that are making daily life harder than it needs to be.
At Sunstone, our psychiatric team looks for patterns in symptoms, life experiences, hormonal influences, and mental health history to help determine whether medication may be an appropriate part of care. If you’re unsure whether psychiatry is right for you, these experiences may be indicators that a psychiatric evaluation could be helpful.
*If any of these experiences sound familiar, a psychiatric evaluation can help provide a clearer understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms and identify treatment options that align with your needs and goals.
You may benefit from a psychiatric evaluation if you are experiencing:
- Persistent anxiety, worry, or panic symptoms
- Depression that impacts your energy, motivation, or daily functioning
- Ongoing mood instability or emotional dysregulation
- Cyclical Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder symptoms that disrupt your monthly cycle and daily life
- Perinatal or postpartum mental health concerns
- Noticeable mood or emotional changes related to perimenopause or hormonal shifts
- ADHD symptoms affecting focus, organization, or daily responsibilities
- Limited improvement with therapy alone
- Questions about current medications or interest in exploring medication options
Our Approach to Women’s Psychiatric Care
At Sunstone, psychiatric care is collaborative, individualized, and clinically grounded. We take the time to understand not only your symptoms, but also the patterns, triggers, and life-stage factors that may be influencing them.
Medication is never a standalone decision. It is part of a broader understanding of your mental health and what support looks like for you long-term.
We offer:
- 60- and 90-minute Initial Psychiatric Evaluations
- Follow-up Medication Management (25 minutes)
- Combined Psychotherapy & Medication Management (50 minutes)
This structure allows us to give medication-focused visits the time they deserve, while also keeping space in therapy sessions for deeper emotional work, pattern exploration, and continued support. Each part of our Sunstone care has its own purpose, so nothing feels overlooked or squeezed into too little time.

Medication Management Process
At Sunstone, your care is never rushed. We follow a clear, step-by-step process designed to understand your symptoms, history, and goals before recommending any treatment options.
Step 1: Complete Intake Form
A brief intake form to get an overview about your background information, current symptoms, and medical history to determine whether psychiatric care is the right fit for you.
What this helps us do:
- Answer initial questions
- Understand your main concerns
- Determine the next best step
Step 2: Diagnostic Psychiatric Evaluation
A comprehensive evaluation to understand your mental health history, symptoms, and any underlying biological, hormonal, or emotional factors.
We explore:
- Current symptoms and severity
- Mental health history
- Hormonal or life-stage influences
- Previous therapy or medication experiences
- Personal goals for treatment
Step 3: Medication Recommendations (If Appropriate)
If medication is clinically appropriate, we’ll walk through options together and develop a plan that fits your needs and comfort level.
This may include:
- Starting a new medication
- Adjusting current prescriptions
- Discussing risks, benefits, and expectations
- Collaborative decision-making
Step 4: Ongoing Monitoring & Adjustments
Medication management is an ongoing process, not a one-time decision. We stay connected to ensure your treatment is working effectively and safely.
This may include:
- Symptom tracking and progress check-ins
- Dosage adjustments if needed
- Side effect monitoring
- Support through changes in life or symptoms
Step 5: Coordination with Therapy
When appropriate, we find that combining medication management with therapy creates a more complete approach to care.
This helps with:
- Better symptom understanding
- Stronger long-term outcomes
- Coordinated care across providers
- Emotional & biological support together
