What Is a Psychiatric Evaluation?
A psychiatric evaluation is a comprehensive clinical assessment conducted by a board-certified psychiatrist. At Sunstone, evaluations are designed specifically around women’s mental health — considering hormonal changes, reproductive history, life transitions, and psychosocial factors alongside traditional psychiatric history.
Unlike a brief intake call, our evaluations are structured, in-depth appointments where we take the time to understand the full picture of what you’re experiencing.

Initial Psychiatric Evaluation (60 minutes)
$660
A comprehensive evaluation covering your current symptoms, mental health history, and relevant medical and social history, concluding with individualized treatment recommendations.
Extended Initial Psychiatric Evaluation (90 minutes)
$910
Designed for individuals with more complex psychiatric or medical histories, this extended evaluation allows additional time for a deeper review of prior treatment, diagnostic considerations, and treatment planning.
After Your Evaluation
Your evaluation doesn’t end with a diagnosis — it’s the beginning of an ongoing, collaborative relationship. If medication is part of your plan, follow-up appointments (25 or 50 minutes) allow us to monitor your progress, adjust your treatment as needed, and continue supporting you as your circumstances change.

What happens during a psychiatric evaluation?
Your evaluation is a comprehensive conversation about your symptoms, history, and goals. We use that information to understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
How long does a psychiatric evaluation take?
Our initial evaluations are 60 or 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of your history. Your evaluation length will be determined during the inquiry process.
Is a psychiatric evaluation the same as therapy?
No — a psychiatric evaluation is a diagnostic assessment, while therapy is an ongoing treatment approach focused on emotional processing and coping strategies. Many patients benefit from both.
Will I automatically be prescribed medication after my evaluation?
Not necessarily. Medication is only recommended when clinically appropriate. We’ll walk through your options together, and you’ll always be part of the decision-making process.
Do you accept insurance for psychiatric evaluations?
Sunstone is a self-pay, out-of-network practice. Initial evaluations are $660 (60 minutes) or $910 (90 minutes). A superbill is available upon request for potential out-of-network reimbursement.
Do I need to be located in Pennsylvania for my evaluation?
Yes — you must be physically located in Pennsylvania at the time of your appointment to comply with state telehealth regulations.
What should I prepare before my evaluation?
It can help to have a general history of your symptoms, current or past medications, and any prior mental health treatment on hand, though this isn’t required. We’ll guide the conversation during your appointment.
What happens after my evaluation if I need ongoing care?
We’ll schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress and adjust treatment as needed. Your care plan can evolve as your symptoms, goals, or circumstances change.
