OCD Psychiatry in Philadelphia

Sunstone Psychiatry for Women provides individualized psychiatric evaluations and treatment for OCD.

If unwanted, intrusive thoughts or repetitive behaviors are taking up hours of your day — or you feel like you can’t stop checking, counting, or seeking reassurance even when you want to — Sunstone Psychiatry is here to provide individualized treatment for OCD.

For many women, OCD symptoms intensify during hormonal transitions like the premenstrual phase, pregnancy, and the postpartum period, which is why understanding your full symptom pattern matters. At Sunstone, we take all of these factors into account to deliver comprehensive OCD support that is tailored to your unique needs and experiences.

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) involves recurring, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges known as obsessions, as well as repetitive behaviors or mental acts known as compulsions.

Common obsessions may involve fears of contamination, harm coming to a loved one, or a need for symmetry or order. Compulsions—such as excessive checking, cleaning, counting, or reassurance-seeking—are often performed in an attempt to reduce the anxiety or distress associated with these obsessions.

OCD is often misunderstood as simply being particular, highly organized, or perfectionistic. In reality, obsessions and compulsions can be time-consuming, cause significant distress, and interfere with daily life.

Postpartum OCD often involves unwanted, frightening thoughts or images related to harm coming to a baby. These symptoms can feel especially isolating when a new mother is afraid to tell others what she is experiencing.

When to Seek Psychiatric Care for OCD

If intrusive thoughts or repetitive behaviors are taking up significant time, causing distress, or interfering with your daily life, relationships, or work, a psychiatric evaluation can help clarify whether OCD — rather than generalized anxiety or another mental health condition — is the most accurate explanation, and identify treatment options. Sunstone Psychiatry offers comprehensive support with medication management and psychotherapy services. As an online psychiatry practice, we serve women throughout all of Pennsylvania.

OCD FAQS

OCD is diagnosed through a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. The evaluation considers the nature, frequency, and impact of obsessions and compulsions; the amount of time they consume; and the distress or disruption they cause.
No. OCD involves unwanted obsessions and compulsions that can cause significant distress or interfere with daily life. Although a person may recognize that these thoughts or behaviors are excessive, they can still feel extremely difficult to control. OCD is a diagnosable and treatable mental health condition, not a personality trait.
Postpartum OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images, or urges—often related to harm coming to the baby—along with compulsions intended to prevent a feared outcome or reduce anxiety. Experiencing these thoughts does not mean that you want them to occur or that you will act on them.
Treatment for OCD may include medication, exposure and response prevention (ERP), or a combination of both. ERP is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy that helps patients gradually face triggers while reducing compulsive responses. If medication is appropriate, we will discuss the potential benefits, risks, and dosing considerations based on your individual needs.

For some patients, ERP therapy alone is effective. For others, a combination of medication and therapy provides better symptom relief. We’ll help determine the right approach based on your symptoms.
